A Life Seasoned with Purpose
Yoga and Meditation
When I landed in Pune over 30 years ago I wanted to “do yoga.” Not knowing the local language well or having the ability to roam around the city was a challenge. I tried several different types of classes, and finally landed at the BKS Iyengar Institute where I was a student for many years. I wanted to learn more about yoga and the various forms I had seen in the US, so I explored different options. Today, my practice and teachings are a blend of all that I have learned and what I believe will serve me and my students in the best possible manner.
After a severe injury in practicing yoga, I turned to meditation, and here, too I explored all types to find the one that resonated with me.
Nutrition
I grew up loving food all kinds. I cherished everything from the aromatic Konkani dishes of my heritage to the perfect slice of New York pizza. When I moved from the United States to India, this relationship with food faced new challenges. The cultural shock was just the beginning.
I missed everything from authentic pasta to my mom’s fish curry. I began a family, and my home became a place of nutritional contradictions. My daughter refused to eat meals, while my son, due to health issues, needed careful heart-healthy monitoring. Seeking answers, I formally studied nutrition. The science clicked with my journalist's mind – the facts, research, and practical solutions made sense to me.
Today, my work combines three things I love:
- Helping clients through food challenges with both science and care
- Writing books about mindful eating that make research easy to understand
- Creating yoga spaces where people can discover what their bodies already know
My simple belief runs through everything I do: true wellness doesn't come from strict rules or complicated plans. It comes from learning to listen to our bodies, to our physical and spiritual hunger, and to the wisdom that appears when we give ourselves space to breathe.
